Service Procedures

R&R and adjustment procedures for the drivetrain on the MF 65.

Source: MF 65 Workshop Service Manual (manual id=12). If external hydraulic system requirements exceed 1.5 gallons, add additional oil; drain when external hydraulic system is disconnected.

MF 65 transmission/differential/hydraulic shared oil capacity: 8 US gallons (6-1/2 Imperial gallons). Same oil lubricates all three systems. Use SAE 90 for ambient temperatures above 50°F, SAE 80 for temperatures below 50°F. Multi-Power transmission install spec is SAE 80 mineral oil throughout.

Source: MF 65 Workshop Service Manual (manual id=12). Preload spec: 0.001 to 0.005 inch.

MF 65 rear axle preload adjustment: install rear axle preload tool (manual Fig. 1). With torque wrench on center nut, it should require 5 to 10 ft-lbs indicated torque to turn the axle. If less, add shims; if more, remove shims. To determine shim count: attach dial indicator to axle housing (point against face of wheel axle), use two screwdrivers 180° apart to check end-play, then add shims equal to total end-play indicated plus 0.005 inch. Axle housing nuts torque to 50 ft-lbs.

Source: MF 65 Workshop Service Manual (manual id=12). On tractors with differential lock, right-hand differential case adaptor is replaced by a differential coupling cap with dog coupling. At transmission serial number SNY51686, change made in differential lock pedal housing — refer to serial number when ordering parts.

MF 65 differential side gear backlash check: use dial indicator between side gears and pinion. Recommended backlash 0.003 to 0.011 inch and is NONADJUSTABLE. Excessive backlash indicates worn differential pinion and side gear thrust washers — replace washers. Right-hand differential case bolts torque to 47-53 ft-lbs and lock with wire after tightening.

Source: MF 65 Workshop Service Manual (manual id=12). Refer to transmission serial number whenever replacing pinion bearing cups, pinion bearing cup housing, and tapered bearings.

MF 65 pinion bearing preload check: with assembly mounted, tighten lock nut securely. Back off lock nut and draw up until torque loading of 18-22 in-lbs is required to turn the shaft (this is NOT torque on the nut, but torque required to turn shaft after locknut tightened). With spring scale attached 3 inches from center of pinion shaft, requires 6 to 7-1/4 lbs pull to equal 18-22 in-lbs torque.
