Massey Ferguson 185 Air Filter Cross Reference

The MF 185, MF 175, MF 178, and MF 188 use a dry-type two-stage air cleaner fitted to the Perkins A4.212 engine. The same outer and inner elements fit all four models.

Outer element: OEM 1447082M91. This is the primary filtration element — it handles the bulk of dust and debris. Replace every 500 hours or when the air restriction indicator signals red. In UK arable and ploughing work, inspect the element every 100 hours and clean by tapping to dislodge loose soil.

Inner safety element: OEM 1860841M1. Replace every third outer element service — do not attempt to clean or reuse it. The inner element is the only thing protecting the engine if the outer element develops a leak or is incorrectly seated.

Inspecting the outer element: After cleaning, hold the element against a bright light source and rotate it slowly. Any pinhole or hairline crack means discard — do not reinstall a compromised element on a working tractor.

Housing seal integrity: The A4.212 is used in tractors that frequently work in ploughed land conditions with high fine-dust loads. At each element service, check the main housing clamp, the pre-cleaner union (if fitted), and the connection to the inlet manifold. Any air bypass into the system will score the bores within hours — the engine has no filter bypass protection.

Pre-cleaner: Many MF 185s are fitted with a vortex or spin-type pre-cleaner above the main housing. Service this at every engine oil change — an overloaded pre-cleaner collapses service intervals significantly.
