MF 185 Guide

Massey Ferguson 185 Oil Filter Cross Reference

The MF 185 uses the Perkins A4.212 four-cylinder diesel engine. This engine uses a canister-style oil filter housing, not a direct spin-on mount — a distinction that causes significant confusion when sourcing parts. The OEM cartridge element is 2654342.

This guide covers: MF 175, MF 178, MF 185, and MF 188. All four models use the Perkins A4.212 and share the same oil filter.

Cartridge vs spin-on: The original filter housing accepts the paper cartridge element 2654342. You fit this element inside the housing canister, then refit the canister bowl. If you find a spin-on filter listed for your tractor, the previous owner likely installed the spin-on adapter conversion kit — see below.

Spin-on adapter conversion: OEM kit number 741614M1 replaces the canister housing with a spin-on mount. Once fitted, use Wix 51460 / Baldwin B7 / Fram PH3614 — the same spin-on filter used on the MF 135 and MF 240. Many working tractors in the UK and Ireland have had this conversion fitted.

Change interval: Every 200 hours or annually, whichever comes first. In dusty conditions, reduce to 100-hour intervals.

Oil capacity: Approximately 8.5 quarts (8.0 litres) with filter. SAE 15W-40 diesel engine oil. In sustained temperatures below -10°C (14°F), 10W-30 is acceptable.

Installation (cartridge): Drain the canister bowl, remove the bolt, and withdraw the old element. Fit the new cartridge element, ensuring the end seals are seated correctly. Refit the bowl with a new bowl seal if available. Fill with fresh oil and run the engine briefly to prime; check for leaks at the canister joint.
