MF 185 Guide

Massey Ferguson 185 Fuel Filter Cross Reference

The MF 185, MF 175, MF 178, and MF 188 all use the Perkins A4.212 engine with a two-stage fuel filtration system. Both filter positions are well covered by major aftermarket brands.

Primary filter: OEM 1447082M1. This in-line filter sits between the fuel tank and the lift pump. It removes water and coarse contamination before fuel reaches the injection circuit. Replace every 400 hours, or earlier if the bowl shows water separation or dark sediment.

Secondary filter: OEM 3637380M1. Final-stage filtration protecting the injection pump and injectors. Replace every 200 hours. The injection pump on the A4.212 is a CAV/Rotodiesel unit — it is not tolerant of contaminated fuel.

Bleeding after filter change: After fitting new filters, loosen the bleed screw on the secondary filter head 1–2 turns. Operate the hand primer pump (fitted to the lift pump body) until fuel flows clear and bubble-free, then retighten. If the engine cranks but won't start, bleed again at the injector pipe unions — slacken each union one turn, crank for 5 seconds, then retighten.

UK/EU note: MF 185s working in Ireland and Scotland often see high seasonal moisture in diesel fuel. Check the primary bowl at every oil change during autumn and winter. An inline water separator fitted ahead of the primary filter is a worthwhile addition on tractors that work wet conditions regularly.
